A Woman and Her Birds—A Proud Portrait

As a pet and people/pet photographer the great majority of pet I photograph are dogs. While I do indeed enjoy and in fact, love photographing dogs, this portrait session was was truly a great pleasure to create.

For this portrait session, it was critical to have a helper and not just any helper. Karen, the birds owner brought her friend who also has birds and knows the ins and outs of bird behavior. Her friend assisted in bird placement and bird sounds and words that interested the birds.

I specifically chose a blue background to complement Karen’s shirt and to contrast nicely with the birds colors. We experimented with a lot of different posing combinations and Karen and her birds did a great job throughout the portrait session.

Just hanging out with my birds!

A Theme-Styled Family Portrait

There have been certain times over the years that families have requested a family group portrait with a theme. Often these portraits reflect and show their devotion to a favorite sport team as you can see in this portrait with the family wearing the Minnesota Twins jerseys.

Some of other theme portraits I have taken showcased golf, and flying (family member was a pilot.) These portraits are a lot of fun to create and generally give a more of a relaxed, casual look to the portraits.

I do recommend to the families that it is always a good idea to also take more traditional portraits with their regular clothing, too. That way, they can pick and choose between the 2 options when they view and order their portraits.

We love our team!

The Black and White Portrait–A Timeless, Powerful Vision.

Three Sweet Sisters.

Black and white portraits can be, not always of course, the strongest way of creating a portrait that is so compelling for views of it to admire and appreciate for many decades.

What is so great these days is that with a click of a button we can see if changing a color image to black and white is something we want to do. I tell my clients that ‘the portrait will tell us.’ What I mean by that is when we see it we will know right away if we like black and white better or if we prefer the color version.

When I prepare the image to be printed by the professional lab I use–I add a mix of red and yellow to give the portrait my own preferred look to it; a little bit like the old style look from the past. Remember portraits create memories and increase in sentimental value as time marches on.
