The Charming Head-Tilt Portrait

‘What are you trying to tell me?’

It is true that dogs tilt their heads because they are trying to figure out what is going on with what they are watching. As a pet photographer it lots of fun to take this type of portrait.

I am often able to instigate this to happen by the specific sounds and noises I create that will then cause a sequence of head tilts. Often times the head tilts are too severe and don’t look the best. However, when the tilts are less severe, like this one of Wynnie–as I have seen it over and over again, they tend to be irresistible to the loving dog parents.

We all know how smart and observant dogs are and this is one of the ways they try to understand what is actually happening.

A Dog Portrait in the Park

What a Great Looking Dog!

Dog portraits in the park present a different set of challenges. Squirrels and other dogs that may be in the park can challenge the attention of the dog being photographed. One thing I do insist on before we go to the park is that the dog parents promise me that they are confident that their dog would not take off after a squirrel.

This being said there are benefits for taking dog portrait in a park. Certainly, the beauty of the outdoors and the possibility of many nice backgrounds. Also, natural light can often be a very flattering light.

As you can see with this portrait of a very noble looking dog the special park I use was a great place to take this portrait.

A Family Portrait Outtake–Its not the main one, but a fun one

A fun family portrait like this one really is never chosen as the main portrait order. However, most of the time  parents cannot part with it and usually order it special as holiday card or as a smaller portrait.

These type of portraits, what I often call for lack of a better phrase, novelty portraits elicit a different response often jovial or even a funny, friendly comment.

As you may imagine, these type of portraits are generally most effective when the include a baby or a young child acting in a cute an charming manner.

Portraits like these add  humor and fun to the ordering process for my clients.
