The Joy and Fun of a People/Pet Portrait.
I talk a lot about people/pet portraits and how much my clients love their portraits. They are the type of portraits that are very rewarding to set up and to encourage the clients while they are working with their dogs while smiling and looking relaxed at the camera.
In this portrait the couple did a great job of corralling their dogs and smiling nicely at the camera. As with all my portrait sessions I give subtle directions to the couple while taking a number of poses as the action is going on.
It is critical to capture a number of images while the best poses are happening because sooner or later the poses will fall apart as the restless and active dogs will want out.
A Family Portrait when THE DOGS are the family.
I have photographed a number of family groups over the years where the dogs are the family. That is, there are no children or it is an older couple where the children are out of the house and in many cases, out of the state.
These loving dog parents are proud of their dogs and it really tends to show strongly in the portraits. Depending on the breed of the dogs and their size I give careful consideration to the composition of the portrait so it reflects the warmth of the relationship and yet keeps in mind that sometimes we have to control the dogs behavior some during the portrait session.
This portrait of the three dogs and the couple, with the dogs spaced between and on each side of the couple make for a well-balanced portrait and the couple looking so happy makes for an image that they just loved.
Karen and Her Parrot-A Whole Lotta Love.
One of the many joys of being a people and pet photographer is when I have the opportunity to photograph a client with a pet that is not real common. Parrots of course, are a bit of a mystery to those of us who really don’t know much about them but nonetheless find them.
Karen has a number of parrots but this one is special to her. This pose was specifically created to show the enchantment Karen has with her special bird.
It was fun to listen to Karen talk to the bird and watch for its response and wait for the moment like this one to happen. As with any specific pose that is requested during a portrait session I give specific directions such as; ’tilt your head a little more’ or ‘raise your chin up a little more.’ Phrases like these to improve the pose and yet keep it feeling fresh and fun.
